Questions for a homeschooling mom

I was at the club where my son goes to learn skating. Lady: Hows his homeschooling going on? Me: Great Lady: So what do you teach him? Me: Depends on the concept we pick Lady: He must be knowing the names of the states in India Me: (In a surprise, for her being so direct) ahh.. No Lady: hmm After some silence she shouts at her child who is skating along Lady: Watch out. (With an impulse, she addresses me about her kid) She never focuses on herself. All the time she wants to see what others are doing Me: (Laughing in my mind) I had gone to meet a few girl friends at the park with our respective kids When I was interacting with the kids I overhear a conversation GF1: Have you seen her how she talks to her son GF2: Ya she is so calm GF1: You see that's why her son is like this. He won't be strong enough for the real world. After a while GF2: Urvi, you should stay with these kids for a few days... so they will learn to behave I was a bit confused as I didn...

What to do when your child doesn't listen to you?

I am a mom of a 4 year old(almost) and he is showing his rebellious side now and then. I can see a disgust and hate all over his facial expression when I try to confront. It really hurts to see him fall when he can't see the danger at the other side of the tunnel. You want to help him, not like a spoon feed but more like evolve through the situation. It aches to see him do things that isn't accepted by the society on the basis of ethics or norms. You want to guide him and hope he excel but he just doesn't listen. Katti I was something like this in my teens but he is such a strong character at this tiny age, I can sense it. I pondered on a win win situation for this crises of mine. I want him to listen to my advice and also let him take his own decisions. His own decision, not that he is capable, but more like a practice of self worth. General Approach 1: Punish them Kids are so common to get grounded or refrained from their favorite activity. They are made to s...

Notes on getting Strong Mental Health

How to be Mentally Strong?  Ami Morin is a therapist and has written the bestseller "13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do". I haven't read the book but I have heard her tedx talk. Here is the guidance by Amy Morin and my notes on them.  Believe in yourself We usually have certain beliefs about ourselves that are developed during our childhood. Like I am lazy to finish any task, I am an angry person, I am only good to people for certain amount of time etc. These are the statements usually by my key person, my guardian or my mom. I do feel offended when she says so but I accept it like a blind faith. If I try to say good things about myself and prove with incidences I can regain faith in my efforts, in myself. That will make me HAPPY. Daily Gratification is a good habit I will cultivate. It will surely make me feel special and thankful for what i have. Achieving my goals will elevate my faith in myself. Don't Compare yourself We find ourse...

One thing that every Gujju Guy should try

It was our society's flag hoisting event where I had a chance to have a short chat with one of my neighbor. She is young, Gujarati, working professional with Infosys pune. She was tired of her frequent trips from Pune to Mumbai and was searching job in Mumbai now. Staying as PG with 3 other girls, cooking and cleaning and having the freedom that every young heart desires after graduation was now boredom to her. This made me realize a few perks I am enjoying. My husband had been staying away from home before marriage while he was working with Wipro. Due to his PG experience, I benefit a lot now. He doesn't mind helping me in household chores. He was used to the sharing and assistance to other fellow mates.  He has an open mind to my thoughts and respects my work as a stay at home mother. He knows that after the hard day at work someone has washed, folded and ironed his clothes. He is a foodie but not picky about food and taste. He understands the efforts taken ...

Yes, I'm an introvert. No, I'm not shy.

What do women talk with their girl gang? I always wondered. The new office I work in has fewer girls and my only rescuer to loneliness is the HR who is sweet and talkative. Initially we talked about food. This being the best conversation starters with everyone. She being a hard core non-vegetarian and I being a pure Jain, the discussions didn't long last. At times, ended me upset. I was really hoping for a friend who would not judge me on my eating preference. But since we both didn't have much of a comfort companion to be with, we tried to adjust with each other and get along. Talks about fashion, travel, lifestyle, skin care, hair care and lot more... We even discussed about petty personal things. I believe we are at much comfort zone now. Not even three months and we are happy spending the lunch hour together. The key to this was, give space to opinions and avoid being judgmental. I have mostly been a loner whole my life. So it petrifies me to be in a group or init...

Togetherness v/s Loneliness

Everyone here wants to be happy. If we think over carefully, what makes us happy or when were we happy the most, we will realize that most of the time we are happy spending time with someone close.  Loneliness is something like an addictive drug that is going to eat you till your death bed. Whereas, togetherness is something that will make each moment memorable and worth living. I happen to see an old couple daily… they are strange. Their clothes are little weary and they seem to be alone. They visit nearly all kind of shrines in the suburb. I judge this because they have that tilak on their forehead and I have seen them near temples in my locality. They carry fruits to offer at the temple. I was happy to see them having that thoughtfulness. So many rich people of my locality that i know visit the temple i go daily but they never seem to carry any offerings. And this old poor looking couple do that.  Once I overheard their conversation and its so much carin...

Colaba Circuit with my best friend

As a child I was always excited to visit Town (the southern part of Mumbai as they say) for every other vacation. This is the place my mother's parents stayed. I was mesmerized by the Gothic style buildings and the tall ceiling rooms. There are more heritage buildings here, than any other part of the country. So I decided to take M on the "Colaba Circuit" (I like to call it that way!) If you went on a vacation to some foreign country what would you like to see?... All the beautiful architechure, museum, restaurants, the market places and other sceneries.. right? I am sure very few of us have seen this part of their very own place, Mumbai.

7 advises for maintaining relationships

There are times when we face tough times with our spouse. It is the time when its not worth knowing who is at fault. It is the law of nature, simply but natural! No two people can think similar and there is about to be some friction. When all that is expected is let the relationship flourish and last long then here is a list of some advises that we have from our experienced elders: 1. Trust each other My mom says faith makes the world live ('વિશ્વાસ ઍ વિશ્વ નો સ્વાસ છે'). When trust is broken the relationship will gradually break. 2. Don't play Blame-Game Everyone has good and bad quality. With time both partners come to know each others well and no one can hide their true self for longer time. One should avoid blaming the other for situations resulting into bad outcome. In the first place blaming is a bad attitude but we tend to blame loved ones knowing that they need us. This will gradually result into breakups. It is better to accept each other as it is. 3. The...
